Early Oakville
Oakville, Ontario may appear to be just another small town in Canada, but its history dates back to a time before the country even existed. In 1799, a group of immigrant families from Oakville, New York settled in the area and named it after their former hometown. The town quickly grew as a port for shipping and industry, leading to early developments such as the first gas-powered streetlights in North America and one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the country. Oakville may not be as flashy or well-known as big city neighbors like Toronto, but its rich history has made it an integral part of Canadian history. So next time you’re strolling through downtown Oakville, take a moment to appreciate all the interesting things that came before you.
Oakville, Ontario has had quite the growth spurt in the last century. In fact, Oakville’s development can be traced back to its founding in 1827 by Colonel William Chisholm. Oakville boasted a booming port and shipbuilding industry, leading to increased population and growth throughout the early 1900’s. In fact, Oakville’s population tripled from 1900 to 1950 thanks to these industries and continued urbanization. The town continued to develop and grew significantly in both population and industry during the early and mid 1900’s, even becoming home to the headquarters of major companies such as Ford Motor Company Canada. Oakville has also been home to notable figures ranging from Hollywood celebrities to Canadian politicians, firmly cementing its place as an important player in both local and national history. The Oakville assembly plant, built on land purchased from the Canadian government, was initially used to produce the iconic Thunderbird model and Mustang. In fact, Oakville’s very first production line was dedicated exclusively to the iconic Mustang. Over the years, Oakville has produced a variety of Ford models and even branched out into producing vehicles for other manufacturers, including the Honda Civic and Acura MDX. The Oakville plant continues to be a vital part of Ford’s global operations and employs thousands of skilled workers. Oakville Hospital
It’s no surprise that the demand for healthcare in Oakville has been steadily increasing, leading to the recent development of a brand new Oakville hospital. The Oakville Hospital currently operates out of two sites – Trafalgar Memorial and Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial. However, in December 2016 it was announced that these sites would be consolidating into one state-of-the-art building at Third Line and Dundas Street West – the Oakville Hospital at South Focal Point. Construction on this $2 billion facility began in May 2018 and is estimated to be completed by 2023. The new Oakville Hospital will feature 656 beds and provide expanded services such as an interventional radiography department, larger operating rooms, and expanded mental health programs. In addition to serving Oakville residents, this new hospital will also serve Halton Region as a whole as well as Waterloo Wellington and Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHINS. As Oakville continues to grow, the Oakville Hospital at South Focal Point will ensure that the community has access to top-notch healthcare for years to come.
